School Overview

Organisation

Longwood accepts children from three months old into the Early Years Foundation Stage (Nursery). The youngest children start in Frogmore, then they progress through Springwell and then Moatfield and finally to Fisher where they stay until the year of their fourth birthday.

Two Pre-school classes – Hillfield and Sarratt – (for four year olds) and the Reception class – Broadwater – (for five year olds) complete the Foundation Stage included under the school umbrella.

Hartspring (years 1 and 2) caters for pupils aged six and seven years.

A purpose built unit within our grounds houses two classrooms; one for Attenborough (years 3 and 4) and one for Old Park (years 5 and 6).

School Times

Preschool – 8.45am – 3pm
Broadwater – 8.45am – 3pm
Hartspring – 8.45am – 3.15pm
Attenborough and Old Park – 8.30am – 3.30pm

Whole school assemblies are at 9am on Mondays and Fridays.

Our Curriculum

When children move into school, they follow the Longwood School curriculum. This is based on the National Curriculum, but often exceeds those expectations.
Children are taught in classes with two year groups making up each class. Maths and English are taught separately to each year groups but the other subjects follow a two year rolling programme.

Please see the documents on the relevant website pages, to get an idea of what the children study in the foundation subjects.

Children thrive as their successes demonstrate with many leaving having secured scholarships and grammar school places over the years. A warm nurturing environment with small class sizes, enable the children to become confident and respectful; behaviour recognised as exemplary and outstanding by Ofsted. For example, we are happy to take the older children for trips into London on the tube or along embankment, safe in the knowledge that they are responsible young adults. We pack the school weeks with fun enriching activities, visits, outings, workshops, concerts and charitable events. Gymnastics, swimming, tennis and astroturf games are offered as part of the curriculum at the Bushey Grove Leisure Centre on our doorstep. We have experienced and qualified PE, music and French teachers. Parents are also so thankful for the peace of mind, knowing that our in-house dedicated team offer productive, fun and caring wrap around and holiday scheme 7am – 7pm, throughout the year.
